Designing SCREAM: A Dream Haunted Attraction Concept

For as long as I can remember, I've been fascinated by the power of themed entertainment to immerse guests in unforgettable stories. Creating my original concept for a SCREAM-inspired haunted attraction has been one of the most exciting and rewarding projects in my portfolio because it combines my passion for horror, cinematic storytelling, and immersive experience design into a single creative vision.

The goal of this project was to imagine how the world of SCREAM could be translated into a walk-through haunted attraction that captures the suspense, tension, and iconic moments fans associate with the franchise. Rather than simply recreating scenes from the films, I approached the design as if I were developing an experience for a major Halloween event. Every decision—from the attraction layout and scenic design to lighting, sound, pacing, and environmental storytelling—was made with the guest experience at the forefront.

Throughout the design process, I developed concept artwork, attraction layouts, queue experiences, environmental graphics, and visual presentations that demonstrate how each scene contributes to the overall narrative. Guests would progress through recognizable locations inspired by the films, with each environment designed to build suspense through atmosphere, scenic detail, and carefully planned transitions. My focus was on creating an experience that feels cinematic while remaining immersive from beginning to end.

This project also challenged me to think like a themed entertainment designer. Beyond creating compelling visuals, I considered operational flow, guest movement, scene progression, and how storytelling can be communicated through architecture, lighting, props, and environmental design. These are the same creative principles that make the world's best haunted attractions so memorable.

One of my biggest professional dreams is to help design experiences for large-scale Halloween events such as Universal's Halloween Horror Nights. Every year, these events demonstrate how film, storytelling, scenic design, technology, and live performance can come together to create truly unforgettable attractions. Working on this SCREAM concept allowed me to imagine what it would be like to contribute to that level of immersive entertainment and motivated me to continue refining my skills as a designer and creative storyteller.

Projects like this are more than portfolio pieces—they represent the type of work I hope to create throughout my career. My long-term goal is to work in themed entertainment, designing immersive attractions that transport guests into unforgettable worlds through compelling stories, innovative design, and memorable experiences. Whether I'm creating haunted attractions, themed lands, or multimedia experiences, I want every project to leave a lasting impression on the people who experience it.

Designing this SCREAM concept has reinforced my decision to pursue a career in visual communications and themed entertainment. It represents my passion for creative problem-solving, immersive storytelling, and experiential design, and it serves as a reminder of the career I'm working toward every day.

Designing Scooby-Doo and the Spooky Castle Coaster

Some of my favorite theme park experiences are the ones that blend thrilling attractions with rich storytelling. That idea became the foundation for Scooby-Doo and the Spooky Castle Coaster, a concept for an indoor launch coaster inspired by the adventure, mystery, and humor of the live-action Scooby-Doo universe. This project challenged me to imagine how a beloved franchise could be transformed into a fully immersive, story-driven coaster experience.
Picture
I recognize that a Scooby-Doo castle-themed attraction already exists at Warner Bros. Movie World. That attraction has been a source of inspiration, and I greatly appreciate how it brings the Scooby-Doo universe to life in a theme park setting. However, this project is my own original interpretation of what a Scooby-Doo indoor coaster could become. Rather than recreating the existing attraction, I wanted to explore a different creative direction—one centered around a more intense, high-speed roller coaster experience with a stronger emphasis on cinematic storytelling and immersive environments.

From the beginning, I envisioned the attraction as more than just a coaster. Guests are recruited by Mystery Inc. to investigate an abandoned castle where mysterious creatures, hidden passageways, and supernatural events have taken over. The queue experience gradually builds suspense through richly themed environments, atmospheric lighting, environmental storytelling, and interactive details that immerse guests in the mystery before they even board the ride.

Once dispatched, riders launch into a fast-paced adventure through the castle, racing through haunted corridors, collapsing chambers, underground caverns, and ancient ruins. High-speed launches, sudden directional changes, dramatic drops, and near-miss moments are carefully integrated with large-scale show scenes, practical effects, projection mapping, and detailed set design. My vision was to create an attraction where the thrills and story work together seamlessly, making riders feel like they are part of their own Scooby-Doo mystery.

Developing this concept allowed me to explore every stage of themed entertainment design. I created concept artwork, attraction layouts, environmental renderings, branding, ride vehicle concepts, and color palettes to establish a cohesive creative vision. Every design choice—from the castle architecture to the ride experience itself—was made to reinforce the attraction's atmosphere and narrative.

One of the most rewarding aspects of this project was finding the balance between storytelling and excitement. Great attractions don't simply deliver thrills—they create memorable adventures through pacing, emotion, and immersion. Designing this concept encouraged me to think about how every launch, turn, show scene, and scenic transition could contribute to a complete guest experience.

Projects like Scooby-Doo and the Spooky Castle Coaster represent the type of work I hope to pursue professionally. My long-term goal is to help create world-class attractions that combine storytelling, technology, and innovative ride systems to transport guests into unforgettable worlds. This concept reflects my passion for themed entertainment design and demonstrates my enjoyment of reimagining familiar intellectual properties through my own creative perspective while respecting the attractions that inspired them in the first place.

Behind the Scenes: Bringing Darkness University to Life

Every creative project begins with a simple idea, but Darkness University has become much more than that. What started as a horror concept has evolved into an opportunity to combine storytelling, cinematography, production design, and visual communication into one immersive experience. Throughout the development of this project, I've challenged myself not only as a designer but also as a creative director, learning how every visual decision contributes to the creation of a believable and unsettling world.

One of the most exciting aspects of creating Darkness University has been developing its identity. Rather than creating a typical haunted school, I wanted to build a fictional university with its own history, atmosphere, and personality. Every environment, graphic, and visual element is designed to make viewers feel like they're stepping into a place that once existed but has since been consumed by darkness. From architectural inspiration to environmental details, each creative decision supports the overall narrative and mood.

The pre-production process has involved extensive concept development, including mood boards, environmental sketches, branding elements, story planning, and production scheduling. Taking the time to establish a strong creative foundation ensures that every future decision—from camera angles to lighting—remains consistent with the vision. Building this framework has been one of the most rewarding parts of the project because it transforms ideas into a cohesive production plan.
Visually, Darkness University draws inspiration from atmospheric horror rather than relying solely on jump scares. Lighting, texture, color, and composition all work together to create suspense. Dark hallways, abandoned classrooms, forgotten laboratories, and eerie campus spaces become characters themselves, telling stories long before any dialogue begins. My background in visual communications has helped me think beyond individual scenes and instead focus on how every frame contributes to the overall experience.

Working on this project has also strengthened my skills in creative project management. Organizing production timelines, developing shot lists, designing promotional materials, and planning visual assets requires balancing creativity with organization. These are the same skills used in themed entertainment, live events, and multimedia production, making this project an important addition to my professional portfolio.

As development continues, I'll be refining concept artwork, designing additional environments, experimenting with visual effects, and preparing for production. My goal is to create something that feels cinematic, immersive, and professionally executed while continuing to grow as both a designer and storyteller.

Darkness University represents more than just a horror video project. It represents my passion for creating immersive experiences that connect visual design, storytelling, and entertainment into something memorable. Every step of the process is another opportunity to learn, improve, and push my creative abilities further. I'm excited to continue sharing the journey as this project moves from concept to reality.
